I would like to see a multi-channel preamp somewhat along the line of the Sony TA-P9000ES but with the following enhancements:
Instead of switching 6 ((5.1) channels, it would switch AT LEAST 8 channels, maybe more. 12 channels should last us a few years into the future.
Instead of selecting between two multi channel inputs (like the Sony), there would be at least 6 multi channel inputs to select from.
There would be at least two two direct multi channel pass-through (bypassing all gain stages and the volume control) inputs to select from.
Another possibility is having video switching capability. The video inputs would be composite, s-video, and component. Circuits to convert from one format to another could be built in or an option.
The box can be set up by the user so that when a certain audio selection is made, an appropriate video selection is made. For example when a paritcular multichannel audio input is selected, a particular video input is selected and, if needed, converted to the appropriate format and routed to the desired video output.
Of course, if the video switching and conversion is going to be a significant cost addition to the audio switching, ampification and control, the video switching can be in another chassis entirely and a small cable can be used to connect the multi channel audio box to the video box. The audio box can then control the video box through the cable.
Whether or not the video switching is included, I would seriously like to see an audio line level controller like I have described above. I have the Sony TA-P9000ES and love it. I just wish it had:
1)several more multi channel inputs to select from and
2)the ability to handle more than a 6 (5.1) channle format.
And of course I would want the sonics to be above reproach.
