Since I am unwilling to upgrade to a 950 and a multi-channel amp at the same time, I had the following thought...

Can the 1050 be used as an amplifier with a separate Pre/Pro? My thought is that I could connect the 950 to the 1050's 5.1 channel inputs.

Is this a valid upgrade option or a stupid idea?

The idea's been kicked around before a bit. Yeah, it should be do-able, but you'll need to settle on a specific volume level for the 1050 to stay at (since you'll have two volume controls in the signal path). In fact, now that I have a 950 in the house, I have noticed a number of remote signals for the two units are the same -- which means you might need to cover the 1050's sensor window to avoid changing the volume on both units at once. It's not an ideal scenario, obviously, but it is feasible. I don't know how often it is actually done, though. Another option would be to buy the multi-channel amp first (maybe a 755 now if the 770's price is out of reach) and use the 1050 as a pre/pro for a while, then replace the 1050 with a 950 at a later date.

Stupid idea...The 1050 sounds great on
it's own. The 950 brings some new high
bandwidth switching and a few new DSP
and digital modes. The headroom in sound
from the separate amp holds the single most potential for hearable improvement.

The 750 (now the 755) has that in spades, while the 1050 is only modestly obseleted
by the 950.
