With the addition of a Dish Network HD DVR I have now run out of HDMI inputs on my tv. My Tv is a 50in Pioneer Elite 1140HD 768p. Currently I have my Toshiba HD DVD player and a Panasonic BD30 Blue ray player going through the 990 and then to the tv. Th other input is being used by my Oppo 981. I do have 2 component inputs I can use but I'm not sure which of the components I have would be the best for that connection. My HD/DVD player is not 1080p and neither is the tv so that was my initial thought but the new Dish HD DVR is also not 1080p so which of my components would you choose to connect w/component. Assume at this point I don't want to spend the additional money for a switcher considering I may upgrade to the 997. Thanks in advance for your help

When I've compared component to DVI/HDMI output for my HD cable boxes (I've done this with a couple different ones), I've seen no visible difference. Based on that, I'd tend to vote for the Dish Network box going component video and leaving the three disc players on HDMI. Added bonus, it is the least disruptive for your existing wiring. smile

You might consider the Oppo HM-31 HDMI switch.
This way you can have 3 HDMI inputs and one HDMI output freeing up one of your HDMI inputs on your display.
Component video seems way too old time in this day and age.

If you look at the HM-31, I've got some notes about my experience with it.

Thanks guys. I assume Gonk that if I decided to go with a switcher you would suggesr the Oppo over Monoprice. I was looking at the Monoprice this morning and they are much less expensive but I guess sometimes you get what you pay for.

My experience with a non-1080p Toshiba (the HD-A2 in my case) and the most basic remote-controlled MonoPrice switch was frustrating to the point of not being usable. Given the choice between that and simply using component video cables, I'd actually switch to component cables. If you think you'll be changing processors soon to one with more HDMI connections, I'd probably suggest not messing any an HDMI switch of any sort, but if you want to do an HDMI switch the HM-31 will let you connect four devices through the 990 to a single input on your TV and it will do so reliably. The more expensive MonoPrice switches would hopefully do the same, but the one I have can't.

I am using the HM-31 and it works very well.
I had a friends Sony BDP-S550 for a long weekend and I ran it throught the HM-31 and I did not see any degradation of the picture at all.
You can connect three devices and have only one output to your display.
Port #1 is the priority port so which ever device you have connected to this port it automatically switches to that port when the unit is turned on.
You can manually select any port you want with either the button on the front of the unit or with the remote that comes with it.
I do not run any of my video through the 990 because this way everything can be used and the 990 doesn't have to be turned on.
A little more wife friendly that way. wink

The Monoprice 4x2 is working quite nicely for me. The first one I got was defective but they easily exchanged it at their expense. The current one works very well, although it obviously can't overcome the madness that is HDMI handshaking and HDCP.
