delema: from my 950 i have both componant cable to tv, and hdmi from dvd983h.to the tv.i am recieving pic @ 480p which means im using componant, why am i not getting 1080i from the hdmi from the dvd983h?i have the input set at the tv as the dvd input and my 950 at dvd opt 3.still no hdmi 1080i pic. what am i missing?

OK, let's see here... You have component video from the 950 to the TV and HDMI from the OPPO 983H to the TV, with optical from the 983H to the 950 for audio. To get upscaled video from the 983H, you need to change the TV's input to that HDMI connection and make sure the 983H's video output is set to the desired resolution (stop disc playback so you only see the OPPO splash screen and press the "HDMI" button until it indicates the desired resolution). Also remember that updating the 983H's firmware resets the player to the defaults, including the output resolution.

all is well, wow for a standard upscaled dvd player, this oppo blows away my former denon. thanks for the help.

Yeah, you can't magically create HD data from an SD source, but if you want to attempt the impossible the 983H is a good way to get close. Bad SD transfers still look bad, but better transfers can really shine.
