If you don't know the amp/receiver, just run wire to the speaker locations. That way, you're ready no matter what equipment you choose.
Good speaker companies to look into include Triad, Paradigm, and PSB. Take a look through the specs and the prices then match them with a good receiver/amplifier. It's hard to be specific as your listening tastes are probably different than mine or somebody else's. It's also difficult as the room will play into the equation, especially with in-wall/ceiling speakers.
