Actually the first gen Toshiba HD DVD players (and perhaps the second gen, too) DID upconvert to the component outputs.

It's appearing that the LG dual-format player may not be that attractive. Early reports indicate that its HD DVD implementation will be incomplete (lacking support for iHD interactive features) and it is likely that the player will retail for over $1000. Too bad.

It's almost assured that the first combo player will be disappointing in at least some regards (much like many early universal players had weak SACD implementations). Just the fact that somebody has done it and put it into production is a good sign, though - paves the way for other players to come along and learn from those early mistakes.

Things may be looking up for the combo player.

If they can't release it in its current state, that may mean they reengineer it to meet HD DVD requirements.

I think I just saw that player at the circuit city website for 1200.00. Doesn't look like it is getting the greatest reviews.
