I have a new MX-850 (ebay, $150) that I need to program. I have gone to the universalremote.com URL and see that there is a manual pdf and a progammer's software download. Any pitfalls?
Thanks.

The MX-850 uses the same software as my MX-700 . I'd suggest getting the software installed even if the remote hasn't arrived yet, downloading some sample files from other sources (my remote files page has an assortment of stuff in it, my review includes a copy of my overall system file , and Remote Central has a ton of system and device files), and playing around a bit. The software takes a little getting used to (I think I touch on that a bit in my review), but once you get the basics under control you'll find that it's surprisingly powerful.

No problem, JSJ1 - you've got a great remote there. I suspect that you'll really enjoy it once you get it dialed in.

As usual Gonk has given great advice. I played around with the 850 software for a couple of weeks before the unit arrived, and it made a world of difference in getting up and running quickly. One additional thought -- don't be afraid to save different types of programming styles -- say "device" (DVD player) vs. "use" (Play DVD) that uses the macro ability to launch several devices -- and test them out. The 850 is so customizable you could tweak it for months.
