With all the excitement regarding the 990 I am really looking forward to the New York show. Anyone who's in the area have any idea when they might be heading in?
It would be pretty cool (at least for me) to actually meet some of you "local" guys. Last years show with the LFM and the new product "peeks" was my greatest reason for going. This Outlaw thing is sort of cult like and I'm in no way apologizing for that. I really like this company, its customer service and its PRODUCT And IMHO it is one of the most enjoyable forums going. Let us know here if there is a particular time/day you're thinking of.

arica9,
A friend and I (he's posted here a few times under "waynedunham") will be taking a train down from Hartford friday morning and another one home saturday afternoon/evening. We're going to stay in the show hotel (NYC Hilton) friday night.

I'm going to see if my schedule allows for an "all day-er" on Saturday. Some of the seminars look to be pretty interesting and in between those, a good bit-o-wandering around the halls. Once I get the times firmed up I'll post here.

Well, last year we had this thread to keep us entertained with information coming out of the HE show. Maybe this year attendees will drop in here and offer some feedback. I'm sure Pat will have pictures for us, although they'll have to wait until he gets home and can upload them.

And to start things off, I just came across an article from UltimateAV with a bit of Outlaw news (along with a picture of a Model 990 sitting in an equipment rack) . Here's the full text regarding Outlaw gear - most of it is old news to us around here, but note the interesting second paragraph: Outlaw Audio's big announcement was the new Model 990 7.1-channel audio/video controller/processor. Three years in development, its major plot points include balanced audio outputs, DVI switching (2-in, 1-out), high bandwidth (100MHz) component-video switching, transcoding between composite, S-video, and component sources (including onscreen display), automatic speaker setup and calibration with an included microphone, and upgradeable firmware. In addition, there's lip-sync delay, subwoofer offset for 2-channel sources, and 24-bit/192kHz D/A conversion on all channels. PCM sources are also upconverted to 24/192, and all major surround formats are supported. The price: $1099! Units are expected to ship shortly.
Outlaw also announced shipment of its smaller LFM-2 subwoofer, with an 8-inch driver and a rated -2dB point of 28Hz ($299, around June). The article can be found here .

Yes the LFM-2 was at the show the LFM-1's little brother. It is the big/little secret. Like the LFM-1, it was co-designed with HSU.
LFM-2: *8" long throw design *-2db at 28Hz *150 watts rms *Ready to ship
Model 1070: *It was in the room. *The hardware is production ready. *The software is 2-3 weeks away (it is being debugged) *Next product out of the gate Model 2150: *True working sample in the room *Beta testing begins in 2 weeks *While it was delayed, they decided to up the amps to 2x90w into 8ohms and 2x140W into 4ohms *Built in electronic crossover bass management so you can use a sub. *I'm pretty sure they said that it would be available this year.
Model 950: *Sold out *Is no more
Model 990: *Peter said it was 3 or 4 decibles, or decible points quieter than the 950. I didn't catch this exactly. *It has a Cirus 49400 chip
I sat in the middle just even with the surround speakers, and the demo was incredible. In a 10,000 ft3 room with $13,000 speakers, it was hard to compare it to what I know. I do know that I still am very satisfied with my 950. And I consider it a compliment to the Outlaws that I have no intention of upgrading it any time soon.
Model 790 *Not in the room *Peter said they were working on making it a little smaller than it is. And the prototype was already smaller than the 770. Interestingly, the 990 is as big if not a bit bigger than the 770. So it certainly be bigger than the 790. *Seems to be furthest away from delivery.
I spoke with Scott and asked him about a universal disc player. With the rapidly changing formats. HD-DVD, Blu-ray and possible demise of multi-channel audio formats, he thought they'd have trouble getting a product to market before it was obsolete.
Pictures to follow.

Here are my pictures from Outlaw\'s demo room at HE 2005. If we get too much traffic, I'll have to give Gonk the pictures to host. Oh, and Outlaw, thanks for the ticket to the show.

Sorry, a case of mistaken identity.. I thought the picture of the insides of the 1070 were the insides of the 990. Oops.

They didn't have an open 990 on hand. But looking at the face plates and buttons on the 1070 and 990, they clearly have some things in common. I got a picture of the back of the 990, but it's not as good as Outlaw\'s picture . I didn't get a picture of the back of the 1070--I'm not sure if there was one on a turntable or not.

Just got back from NYC myself (did get the chance to meet Pat and Wayne and put some faces to forum writers)and after reading through the posts of others don't know what I can add that is real substantive.
I do agree that the Outlaw room was a real grabber. Much bigger than last year. The equipment (Outlaw and the speaker set ups ) was really classy. The sound was beyond much I had ever had the chance to hear. That's a whole lotta speakers. One of the demo pieces was the whole plane crash scene from Flight of the Phoenix. I swear I was white knuckle flying myself by the end.
I was in the first session with just a few people but by the end, the line was already forming in the hall. Outlaw has a lot of recognition among the masses.I over heard one guy say. I just love that you're pissing off all the big guys.
I was really pleased to see and hear the RR2150 with smaller speakers, the LFM2 and a novel piece of gear (said Peter) called a turntable. This is one beautiful looking and sounding receiver. Scott says it is looking good to get to market in the near future. Not months and months was my impression.
The LFM2 is around 18 high X 24 deep X 12 wide. A great size for many rooms. At the price and size I bet alot of people will elect to run these in pairs easily.
I asked Peter what differences he felt there were in the sound quality of the 990 v 950. He said that they, including the beta folks, thought the 990 sounded smoother and less bright than the 950. And let me say, the 990 is BIG about the size of my 770 which makes the 950 look tiny. Looking over the actual back panel was a feast. The pics don't do it justice.
As reported the 790 is working through some heat issues and the 1070 is going back and forth with the debugging process of the software. I was a little surprised to hear that there are no more 950's. End of the story. So anybody that's upgrading should have even less a problem with the resale markets.
One last non Outlaw note. I listened to a demo with Mark Levinson (the legend himself)that completely blew me away. A new DAC of sorts that is designed to hook to a PC via USB and with proprietory software completely convert/modify the digital sound so it is breathtaking, listenable and sweetly analog sounding. Now here's the real kicker. We listened to Mp3 at lowest bit rates and they sounded phenominal. This product is known as Burwen Bobcat. Works only with Windows through Media player 10. No Apple (including iTunes) yet. Mark feels this is the biggest advance he's seen in 50 years in audio. He even uses his Sony laptop as his transport for CD's now. Did I already say here's the real kicker? I lied; anyone who knows Levinson or Red Rose is thinking "Yeah sure at what cost" As Mark said, "about half the price of most of the cables at the show. $1500.00. Watch out for more about this. Takes a current trend in music and makes it audiophile grade.

As promised Photos from the Outlaw Audio room at H.E. 2005 . Others have already reported the highlights. The demo was quite impressive. I heard people talking about it throughout the show. I do believe I'm going to sell of my 950 and go with the 990 ... it's NICE. I'm also seriously considering selling off my 1050 (I wonder if anyone has an older one than I? ) and replacing it with a 2150 since I've been using it (the 1050) in stereo only mode anyhow. The show as a whole was much smaller than in the past. Some of the big names weren't there (Sony & JVC come to mind), but there were some new ones (RCA/Thompson). There were also many old favorites - Aprion Speakers ( very nice, sound like superb "bang for the buck" material!!), Cinepro & Silicon Optix put on an excellent shared demo that I felt rivaled the Outlaw's in terms of demo quality ... but the setup sure cost a whole heck of a lot more! And David, it was a real pleasure to meet & visit with you!! G'night,

Well my take on the Outlaw demo was that the sound was incredibly immersive. I wish there had been a music 5.1 demo. Possibly Sting, or Diana Krall. My demo session was packed, and everybody seemed pretty impressed. The 990 is huge, and I asked why no second component out? Just figured people would be using one display, was the answer I got. I was also told the software for the 790 was still being worked on and possibly a five channel with the balanced connections in the future. Two torroidal transformers would be in the new 790 and package deals numbers were given out. They were as follows:990/770 $2698 990/755 $2298 990/7100 $1898 The other big news to me was that the Outlaw 1070 receiver would have the same cirrus chip the 49400 as the 990. I think the wattage was 65 watts per channel, and the price would be $899. With DVI switching, a very nice price. Peter Tribemans mantra for the demo was to debunk the myth that you need two systems. One for audio and one for video, I just wish the demo had something to show more to show that at least for the audio side. Maybe I will go there tomorrow with my new Outlaw CD case and bring my Diana Krall DVD to add to the demonstration. One last thing was that we should be contacted within the next 10 days. We being those that are on the reservation list.
