Anyone have thoughts on a 7100/1070 (used as a pre/pro)? I still haven't quite gotten myself to purchase the 950/7100 combo (or the950/770). I realize that without hearing the new 1070 it would be pure speculation, but based upon experiences of those who used the 1050 as a pre/pro, what do you think? This would get all of the latest technology and still keep the price reasonable. I'm also looking picking up a 7100 and a Sherwood Newcastle P965. I realize that I may be opening a can of worms here, so please don't blast too hard. And yes, I realize that the P965 doesn't have the latest vido connections.

It is still too early to make any sort of comparison between 950 and 1070 as a pre/pro, but there have been plenty of people (myself included) who had some very fine luck with using a 1050 as a pre/pro. It's not an unreasonable idea, that much can at least be said with certainly. Beyond that, it will at least be interesting to see how the 1070 turns out.

I am using the 1050 as a pre/pro/surround channel amp now and am strongly considering upgrading to the 1070 and doing the same thing with it.

However, I have a hard time understanding the 1070/7100 combination. The 35-40 wpc power difference doesn't seem that much. Unless you have completely matched speakers at all 7 locations, you might want to consider getting 2-3 200M's for the fronts and let the 1070 drive the rear. I do the equivalent with a older 205 Parasound Amp.

73Bruin,
I presently have a Yamaha RX-V2200 with 2 Outlaw M200 mono blocks driving the front L/R Boston Acoustics VR-M90s, while the Yamaha drives the center VR-MC, surround VR-MXes, and rear center VR-M/EX, with a Yamaha YST-SW800 subwoofer rounding out the system. What I'm thinking is that I'd like to step into separates, but I'm hesitant to do the 950/7100 deal as the 950 is seems as if it is starting to get a bit long-in-the-tooth. I was thinking that the 1070 would get me the latest greatest at the end of this year or the beginning of next, and then I would upgrade to the new Outlaw pre/pro when they finally get around to releasing one. It's either that or as I stated in the beginning post, I'm looking at a different manufacturer for the pre/pro now for a little more money to get newer features and adding an Outlaw 7-channel amp. I've been impressed with the quality/$ ratio that I see with my M200s and would like to stay in the Outlaw camp. Also, one of the big selling points is the constructive/helpful atmosphere that I feel in the forums here at the Outlaw site. It sure seems a lot friendlier than many of the other sites that I also frequent.

As before, I look forward to any input that anybody can add. Thanks.

Jeff

Unfortunately, I don't know enough about your specific speakers to discuss their power requirements. However, if you already have the 200M's, I understand your reluctance. If the 1070 has sufficient power to drive your center and surrounds, I think that is the way to go personally (this assumes the sound quality of the 1070 pre/pro is close to that of the 950).

I just did the 950/7100 deal. I will only use 5.1 and DVI switching is not important to me right now. In addtion I like the fact that all the bugs are worked out of the 950. I figure I will keep the 950 for a few years and then upgrade to the 970. I also guess that the 950 will sell and little quicker in the used market than the 1070 would.

Isn't 65W x 7 a little low? Or is it just an underated wattage rating? I would think that driving all 7 channels, would push this puppy a little.

Now Im by no means an expert, but if you could run the fronts/center through a 3 M200s, then that would be a pretty nice combo.

Well, the 1050 was 65Wx6 with three channels driven, and it was consistently praised for being a real workhorse - some of the Outlaws have worked at NAD in the past, and NAD's tradition of including conservative amp power ratings on receivers seems to have carried over. My 1050 drove Paradigm Reference Studio speakers surprisingly well. Of course, the pre-amp outputs are there if you want to add a few M200's, as you point out.

I broke down purchased the 950 b-stock/new 770 combo. This will probably mean that the 970 will soon be released, as it usually turns out that when I finally get around to purchasing something, the one that I really want comes out shortly afterwards. I've been into computers for about 20 years, so I'm sorta used to this.

I will tell you guys that I'm very impressed with the sound that comes from the 950. While its feature list is not much different from my Yamaha RX-V2200, the clarity and imaging that it produces is in another league. I'm very pleased with this combo, but I have a bunch more listening to do. If you are interested I've started a thread on my thoughts/experience with this combo in the 950 Forum. Here is the link: http://ubb.outlawaudio.com/ubb/Forum15/HTML/001384.html

Thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts with me. Bobm, I used some of your reasoning to help justify to myself purchasing the 950, thank you very much.
