Does anyone have a reccomendation on a good, sub $500 5-DVD changer? I don't need DVI, or multi-channel audio, but will need it to work as a CD player as well. Hacking for CC and Macrovision is also a plus

As far as affordable players with good video quality, Denon is one of the best, although I don't know how much support exists for hacking. The DVM-1815 retails for $370 and might suit your needs well (for $100 more, the DVM-2815 adds DVD-Audio).

I'm not really sure on the video quality, but I saw a Toshiba 5-disc DVD/CD/SACD/ DVD-Audio changer for 179 in a store today. Its the SD-6915.

So I've been looking and I like the looks of both the NAD 57(1/2) and the Marantz vc-5400. Anyone have some opinions on either?

I don't have any hands-on experience with either brand, although some older Marantz players have had some trouble with the Secrets shootout tests . The NAD players look nice - I don't know anything about their actual performance, but it looks like they probably have a more substantially engineered analog audio section than a lot of players. There's one review of the T571 at AudioReview that might be useful if you haven't already seen it. The Marantz does offer DVD-Audio, whereas the NAD changers do not.

If you haven't already done so, I'd try to take some demo discs to a dealer and look at the players for a bit.
