I haven't tried recording music. Might be an interesting experiment, though. The manual is pretty poor, so expect a fairly steep learning curve, but once you get used to it the interface is pretty decent. As for build quality, I'd say it's better than the average DVD player (probably due at least in part to the bulk involved in the hard drive assembly). The panels all fit together reasonably well, but the faceplate is plastic (not aluminum). I am still not a huge fan of the silver, but it ended up being fairly unobtrusive alongside all the other black equipment.
