I know that the 1050 can decode DTS but does the dvd player also have to be able to decode DTS to listen to DTS soundtracks ?

No. The DVD player only has to be able to pass the DTS soundtrack to the digital audio output, which should be true of almost all DVD players (the first generation of players could not do this, but most any player bought in the last 3 years or so should be able to).

My player is from 1998 and does support DTS, but from what I can find online I don't think the DVP-S500D had DTS compatibility. Check the manual for any mention of DTS. If it supports DTS, it should have a menu option somewhere for it. (My Panasonic had DTS output disabled by default.)

On my part, I haven't been able to figure out if I'm getting DTS sound on my 1050, because I feed the DTS signal to it and it shows the pointer indicating that it is RECEIVING DTS signal, but the DTS light never turns on ... any previous experience with that?

How are you feeding the signal in? Are you connected via digital input or analog?
