Hey all. I'm a new Outlaw, and I just purchased the 950/7100 combo. I'm going to get my gear cabinet ready while I wait for UPS to show up with my goodies.

So, I know the 7100 has big 'ol heatsinks. Will it be OK to have it in a cabinet with a closed rear, or do I need to cut cooling slots? The front of the cab is generally open. It's an Ikea thing with a sliding glass door than only covers half the cabinet at a time.

Welcome to the Outlaw family. The 7100's design is very similar to my 750 -- I'd probably cut some openings in back for cooling air flow. With an inch or two (preferably two to three) clear above it and some openings in the back, it should stay pretty cool.

Regarding the Elan fan: MUCH nicer than my $8.50 fans from Parts Express, but also $280! And I'd need 5!!

I didn't know how much they were since I got them at wholesale. Probably last a lot longer than your Parts Express fans.

Gee, ya figure? My PE fans (at least some of them) run all day long on weekends, and I have been using them for months. At what I paid, I can afford to throw them out several times and still be WAY ahead. Then again, if I could get wholesale gear, I'd probably have a different setup.

I just picked up a Elan fan at Woodbridgeaudio.com for $149 plus shipping. Should be here in a couple of days. I don't know if they have any left but for that price I couldn't pass it up. Also it has a trigger to turn on with the amp and a heat sensor to adjust fan speed accordingly. It should be here next week so I will let you know how it goes.

If you are skilled at wood working and can solder, you can make an amp cooling system for much less than $250. I bought two speed controlled brushless fans for $30 and added a Velleman thermostat kit for an additional $11. I mounted the fans in 3U rack mount panel under the 7100 which sits on a 3U ventillated shelf. I then built a plenum under the amp to direct the fan air stream upwards into the bottom of the amp shelf.
I changed out the pnp drive transistor on the Vellemen board with an npn to invert the drive signal so the power relay would come on at a set temperature instead of off. The electronics and the fans are powered by an inexpensive 12vdc power supply. If anyone is interested, I will be glad to help.

I have no class and less ambition to build things. I bought a $6 clip-on house fan that I connected to the open back of my equipment rack and just flick on when I have my Aragon amp running (and it can get quite warm.)

Works great. Costs less. Gives my index finger a periodic brief workout.

Bob, that brief finger workout makes me sweat just thinking about it. You need an X-10 plug-in module for that fan.
