Also posted in Tips and Tricks hoping to get more responses... Yes, I'm an ass

About this time next year I'll be selling my Pioneer SD-533HD5 to a friend and I am thinking about taking the leap into the world of front projectors.

For one thing, they seem to be advancing very well, and their prices are dropping a little too. For another, it'll be a hell of a lot easier to move around then the Pioneer Elite I want

I just read about the New Runco line that has the DLP2 chips and wondered if anyone in here has any current DLP projectors. If so, how do you like them? Pros and cons?

Also, when the time comes, which is still a ways off, I'll need opinions as far as what screen to get and so on. I know I'll be bothering Soundhound as always, but I'm always open to others advice and opinions. Thanks!

*Note* I have read so many damn reviews on projector differences, as far as "DLP versus CRT" goes..but I still cannot decide which will suit me more. Some light being shed on this would be greatly appreciated.

*UPDATE* I just read that DLP's are limited to a single resolution..very interesting. Sounds like CRT is much much more versatile at this point.

I don't know if you have already found this site:

http://www.projectorcentral.com/

This was quite helpful when I wanted to get a handle on the state of current projectors and technologies.

I'm not ordinarily a "wait for the next breakthrough" type of guy, but .....

According to a thread on the AVS Forum, a new projector tech is going to come out in Sept. that will beat anything currently on the market. Reportedly it will use laser as a light source.

These reports are still sketchy but the source of the info includes forum owner Alan Gouger so I tend to trust the reliability. Also, the companies involved in this tech are "huge" according to the posters.

My total-shot-in-the-dark guess on pricing is $6K-$8k because the leaked reports suggested pricing "just below" that of high quality rear projectors.

You can head over to AVS Forum and read the thread yourself. Just do a search for "laser projector"

Wow, thanks bob..much appreciated. Same goes to you Joshorr. I'll save that LInk and start reading up on all the little things I am in the dark about.

Like I said, I won't be in the market till next spring/summer..but I am as big a video nut as I am audio..almost

I like doing as much research as possible b4 I drop several grand on gear. Thanks again!

UPDATE:

With some recent postings, the truth and fantasy in that AVS thread is getting blurred. Maybe not Sept. Maybe not laser. Maybe not anything.. Sigh.

In short, it's going the way of too many Internet threads: To Never-Neverland.

I don't want to be spreading half-truths or no-truths, so anyone interested should take a personal look at the thread.

I still have no idea of what I want. If I were to want one now, I'd cry from confusion. Im more interested in keeping the Audio part intact...and there are so many choices when it comes to center channel placement and such. Do I want a wall mounted screen...do I want a hanging one that comes a few feet out into the room..yada yada...it never ends!!!

I wish I wouldnt have looked at all those sites..I need to take a break from all this projector talk for a while.

The raw output device is single pitch, but this is the nature of discrete digital devices. There are some paybacks in not being forced to convert to analog and drive an inherently non-linear device. As the scalers get more and more CPU (GPU, DSP, whatever you want to call it) horsepower things should keep getting better. Once the HD-DVD format is established I'll probably search for a display that matches that native resolution (or the most popular, defacto standard, whatever) and go for that.

DLP has always looked more like film to me, for whatever reason, so if you like movies give it a good look.
