The way the technology is advancing, pretty much everything video-wise will be obsolete in a couple of years.
That is, if you definition of obsolete is "no longer current S.O.T.A. or near S.O.T.A.
My definition of obsolete is:
If it is broken, repair parts are not available.
OR
There is no new source material to play on it.
OR
I have something else that does a better job in all significant respects so I have no desire to use the old unit.
I have a 999es (it replaced a dvp-ns700p) and it has noticably better picture quality over the 700p, which was also pretty good. I figure by the time that HD DVD is in a price range that I am willing to spend, I will have gotten a lot of use out of the 999es.
In your case, I would try and compare the two units you are interested in. If you find that you can be happy with the ns755, go for it and save some money towards the HD DVD player. If in doubt, get the better piece of equpment if you can afford it. I have never said to myself "I should have bought the lower priced unit". Plenty of times I have bought the more affordable unit and have not been satisfied. I don't do that anymore. If I can't afford what I want, I wait till I can.
