Hi everyone,

If connecting inputs into the 5.1 channel inputs on the 1050, does this soley amplify the input signal?

The reason I ask is because I want to know if I already have a pre-amp and want to just use the 1050 as an amplification source, will using the 5.1 channel inputs accomplish this? Please bear in mind this is for two channel (stereo) input.

Best Regards,

johnny5

I just read through the manual and it looks like I can do this.

My only other question pertains to the loss of bass management of the 1050 when connecting through the 5.1 channel inputs (according to the manual). Does this mean that I will not be getting a low frequency signal if I have a sub connected?

Thanks again,

johnny5

Doing what you are talking about will do two things: 1) potentially cause some issues with volume control (the 1050 isn't designed to be a pure power amplifier, and the 5.1 input is subject to the 1050's volume control -- you may need to find a "sweet spot" for the 1050's volume) and 2) lose the 1050's bass management (as you indicate), which means that if you are feeding it a two-channel input to the left and right main channels of the 5.1 input, there will be nothing going to the sub.

Are you really only looking to use the 1050 as a stereo amp? If so, that's probably not the best use of the 1050.

Gonk,

No, I am not looking to use the 1050 solely as a stereo amplifier. I was just toying with the idea. It will still be used as my primary A/V receiver.

One question though. If someone decides to use the 5.1 channel inputs from an already decoded signal from, for example, a DVD player, would they still run into the same problem of finding that "sweet spot" on the control volume setting?

Gonk is referring to the situation where you have two volume controls in the signal path. That would not be the case if you had a DVD player connected to the 5.1 inputs. In fact, that's basically what the 5.1 inputs are for; connecting an externally decoded 5.1 signal.

I use the 5.1 inputs for my CD player, because even though it's only two channels, I don't want it going through the extra A-D-A step, and connecting it to the 5.1 inputs does that. I also don't want bass management on my CDs because my fronts are full-range.

I was hoping you weren't trying to buy the 1050 just as a 2-channel amp, just wanted to make sure . If you wanted the bass management, you could use one of the stereo analog inputs, but at that point it may be easier to just bypass the pre-amp (since you'll be doing an A-D-A conversion in the 1050, so you probably may as well connect the CD player straight to the 1050 via analog or digital).

If you use the digital coax input on the 1050, don't you bypass the analog step?
