Whole house surge suppression has worked for me for 10 years now, (except for the wireless dog collar!).
I used a special type of circuit breaker to cover my whole house. You should have a licensed Electrician install this. It doesn't take long in most instances.

The advantage to using a surge suppressor at your rack is the various devices you plug in offer higher amounts of insurance if they don't protect your equipment properly and you can insyall them yourself.

Surge suppressors don't last forever and do need to changed out after a period of time!
