Speaker repair - is it worth it ? - 10/13/10 09:12 PM

Anyone had speakers repaired ?
New foam edges installed.
If yes, were you satisifed with the results ?
I can get this done for about $75 total for both with shipping.

I have some "older" Bosoton Acoustic VR-970 powered towers for my front L/R ch. Works well in my LR as it takes less space - no sub sitting out front . . .
I guess I always ran the internal powered subs a bit loud.
Was watching War O Worlds a while back and the foam edge ripped "loose" > not ripped more like the glued foam edge popped loose on both of the side firing 10" "sub" woofers = L/R. the cones - voice coils - 12" passive radiators still seem OK and top end was not damaged at all. BA no longer carries or sells any of the replacemnt parts - kind of an odd shaped basket for the woofer. For now I wound up buying some closeout inexepnsive replacement woofers at $55 each but they just do not deliver the same punch - most higher end 10" "subs" ( SEAS - Hi-Vi) were a bit more than I wanted to pay ( $200ish each ) and were generally to deep I only have about 5" depth. I thought I might go ahead and repair and hold onto as spares.

I had the 10" woofers on my Dahlquist DQ-20i's redone and they sound great. If the foam isn't ripped and simply pulled away from the steel basket, you could try gluing them back together with the appropriate adhesive. I'm sure there's youtube videos out there showing how it's done.

I did the 12 inchers on my large Advents. It cost about $30 for a kit online and took about 30 minutes for each one. Cleaning the baskets was the hardest part. Used the old cones, just had to replace the foam surrounds. Go to www.newfoam.com and check out the instructions on how to do it. It is easier than you think. My Advents sound as good as they ever did.
