Active crossover questions/help - 04/09/08 05:34 PM

Hello,

I do feel I will need to use an active crossover to help me with my two HSU subs. I Use two systems in the room, a tube based one for music and I also have the Outlaw Audio 1070 and an Anthem MCA5 Mk2 amp for HT. I use the extra set of outputs for the two subs and I feel it doesnot work well.

Using an active Xover like the one from HSU or Marchand I am hoping with work. I want to bass to sound musical, not loud or boomy.

The Marchand can be set for different input impedances and that is nice.

Anyone using and active Xover , can you please shed some light?

Thanks in Advance

What do you want to know that hasn't already been said about it? The Marchand crossover is about your only alternative if you want to keep the quality level consistent with your other components. Your only other route is to break out the soldering iron and make one yourself, in which case, Elliot Sound Products makes excellent products (although it is more of a DIY project than Marchand).

Hi Altec,

The Marchand looks like a graet unit for me. I am told the input impedance of my subs in only 10k ohm. The tube amp has an input of 100k ohm. I know the active crossover can adjust gain yet HSU Research tells me they can adjust the input impedance to match my amp.

In your opinion, should I have this done to or just use a Marchand ?

The 10K impedance should work fine, but I'd check what Marchand specs for this. If you're going the solid state route, just about any op-amp in use today can drive 2k ohms to full output. If it is a tube crossover, it depends on if it is a cathode follower or not.

I am getting both subs changed to 100K. I am sure when I get the Marchand, it can handle the low spec. Hsu wuill adjust one and I wil have a buddy adjust the other one. I am hopinytg the movies wil sound beter and not rumble and make the loud, soft bass sound.

Altec,

Someone in my audiophile club loaned me a Bryston 10B-s active crossover. The SQ is now much better. I need to figure out what to set the high and low pass settings. I wil get a Marchand Xm9 I think.
