IR Sensor recommendations

Can I run an IR Sensor directly into my 970 and then run a flasher out to my DVD without an external interface box such as a Niles MSU250? If so..do any of you have a recommendation on a sensor with a 3.5mm plug?

With the 990, I would say "no", but the 970's IR ports are different. This thread might interest you. Some of the components that I used in my IR distribution system might also be appropriate in this case.
