would i gain anything by moving up to the 970 vs. my 950? any help would be appreciated! thanks.

Not a lot, I don't think. There are some extra features. You'd gain an extra component input, DVI switching, 7.1 analog input rather than 5.1 analog, video transcoding from composite/s-video to component, and Pro Logic IIx processing. As far as sound quality, I can't speak definitively but sonically I don't think there is much significantly different between the two.
