Question about Canton speakers

Question about Canton speakers - 04/30/06 04:07 PM

So I setup my vintage Canton bookshelf-size speakers, and they are so much better than my large Dahlquists that I am getting rid of the latter and putting the Cantons on stands.

The speaker has two mounting holes on the back, clearly for attaching the things to a stand or bracket.

Does anyone know if there is a specific stand that is required, or are these holes pretty standard?

Do stands typically come with adjustable hardware to fit most any speaker? TIA.

If the holes are on the back, I'd assume that they are for a specific bracket (not a floor stand) - and you'd probably need to know exactly what bracket Canton had in mind for it.

Hmmm. Thanks gonk.

I've posted a photo of the unit:

Can this shake out any more information? It's a crummy photo -- that silver blob in the middle is a quarter I added (rather cleverly I thought!) for scale. I've seen lots of older Cantons on eBay with these particular holes.

I would love to get rid of my behemoths and mount these pups up.

As an aside, and O/T, now that I am hooked to Cambridge P500s, is there a reliable place I can put up a wanted ad?

Oh! Just a quick warning to those that click on the image: I just rememebered that that site may have some offensive (to some) ads and so forth. I use AdBlock so I don't ever see them.

The guy who built that site is the one who owns F****dCompany, so it's perhaps not the paragon of class (but it works well).

Sorry if I have offended.

I'm really not sure what to make of those two holes. You might be able to get more info from Canton USA , either from a manual off their site (although I didn't see any older manuals) or an e-mail.

If you're looking to buy or sell used gear, Audiogon is a good place to start. You can advertise gear to sell or post a "wanted" ad for gear you are interested in buying used.

Roger your last re: Audiogon.

That's where I bought (on your rec) the Cambridge Amp that is now running the Cantons.

It was an excellent transaction, though I thought the many required interactions with the site as the purchase is executed were tedious and of dubious additional worth.

I'll check out the Canton site.

Cheers.

Here was the quick response from Canton. I am very impressed!

Dear Mr. XYZ,

Thank you for your questions about the GL-260. The GL-260 was manufactured between 1983 and 1989. For stand mounting, the LS 80 stand set would be compatible with your speakers as they include 2 M 6x12 screws for mounting. To mount them on the stands, it would likely be a vertical set-up. Finally, we unfortunately do not have manuals available online, but the specs for the speaker should be printed on the back.
Thanks!

Sincerely,
Amelia ...

Now, there is no way I am springing $175 for those stands when the speakers cost $115. Does this email suggest that the mounting hardware is fairly common?

Thanks.

What kind of Dahlquists are these replacing? DQ-20's? 10's? Are you keeping them or selling them?

I can't think of any speakers costing less than 5 or 6 grand that can replace a pair of DQ 10's, let alone something that costs $115 ?????

I really love Canton speakers and a couple of years ago upgraded my old Canton towers to the Canton Ergo series with two 9" woofers and also the matching Canton large center speaker. The Canton speakers to me have such a natural smooth sound. You might consider listening to some of the new Canton speakers for your mains and center and maybe change speakers?
