analog vs digtal spl - 04/22/05 05:59 PM

what are the thoughts on the digital vs analog rat shack spl meters? I was recently there and they didn't have any of the analog ones in, they have a new price when they arrive. I went ahead and bought the digital, but haven't used it yet. Waiting for the weekend. Any thoughts, other than getting to watch the needle bounce?

I've never used the digital, but the thing I like about the analog is the visual aspect of the display. I'm not reading numbers and doing math to try and estimate how far off I am or how close around the target everything is. I have a mark I am aiming for and can easily see where everything is in relation to it.

I bought the digital, but I don't think it's worth the extra money. Having a discrete number is nice, but if it's reading like 72.5 it'll flash back and forth between 72 and 73 really fast. Sometimes it can be difficult to read because it does that so fast. You have to kind of guess ahead of time what you're reading is so that you can set it properly. It has a movable range of about 20 db, so it's not like you have to pinpoint it. I imagine you'll mostly be trying to hit about 70-75 db for room calibration? Shouldn't be a problem. If you were all over like 60 something to 90 or over 100 db's, then it could get annoying.

I've seen posts from some people who have used both and found the analog easier to read. I've been very happy with the analog one that I've been using for several years.
