1070 / 970 / 990 Processor

Hello All! New to Forum,but have been a 1050 owner for quite some time. Gettin` the upgrade bug,and may give the 1050 to my son. I see that the 1070,970,and 990 have the same processor,so forgetting about power,and features,does this mean that the 1070 would sound as good as the 990?? Also,will 6 speakers+sub run O.K. on these 7.1 units? Well,not really new,but haven`t posted in so long might as well be new. Forgot to mention I`m just referring to movie sound here. Have a separate 2-channel system. Best Regards, Pete

The processor in the three is the same (the Cirrus 49400), but the rest of the platform used for the 990 includes a number of improvements over the 1070/970 chassis. It's important to look at the whole picture, particularly DACs, and the 990 does go a bit farther in that regard. Doug917 recently compared his Yamaha 2500 receiver (acting as a processor) to both the 970 and the 990. He found the 990 to sound better than the 970 for both music and movies.

Reports are that the 990 is the best sound by an outlaw product. This thing has been likened to the Anthem AVM30 processor.

Some have reported in these forums that for movie listening the 1070, 970 and 990 are close. I guess that it depends on how critically you listen.

I would tell you as a 970 owner that it is a great product and I'm sure that if you upgraded to the 1070 you would be quite happy.

I think that with a 6.1 system you would hook up the center back channel to the Left Surround Back.

I would call Outlaw to verify that one.

As far as 6.1 sound is concerned I'm in agreement that consulting Outlaw is probably best, but from what I recall it wouldn't matter as all rear information is mono: DTS-ES is 6.1 discrete and Dolby Digital EX uses a matrixed, mono rear channel (which personally begs the question of why bother with two rear speakers if you're only dealing with a mono signal, but that's not entirely relevant). So whether you plug it in to either it shouldn't make much of a difference.

Update: Ok, I double-checked and I'm slightly wrong. Dolby Pro Logic IIx uses stereo rear channels.

Bother with it if you have the room and becuse it does make a difference. There are many movies which do pans on the rear (helicopters etc.) and it works suurprisingly well. Definitely some improvement and all it costs you is one speaker.
