Need Help Please - 09/30/08 04:17 AM

I currently have the 990 and the 7125. I am running Aperion Audio 633T Towers, 634 VAC Center Channel,632 LR Surrounds and the Intimus S-10" subwoofer. Should I be running the 633 T as small or large? How about the surrounds, sub and crossovers for each? Thank you for your help

I will start with the surrounds. You usually do not get any significant bass information for your surround channels and, if you do, it would be nearly imperceptible to your ears. Let your sub handle that. I have my 4 surrounds crossed over at 100Hz.

Your fronts depend somewhat on your listening habits and your preference. From a very quick read on the internet, it sounds like your main speakers are more than capable of handling the typical range of frequencies that you will get out of music sources. This is just my opinion, but I would try setting your mains to small and the crossover at either 40 or 60.

So, to summarize, my opinion is to definitely set your surrounds to small at one of the higher crossover points, and try your mains at small with a low crossover point and see how you like them.

I didn't answer the whole question. I also suggest the center channel set to small.

I believe your sub has its own crossover controls. I would set those controls to their highest setting (160Hz?) and never touch them again. The 990's bass management will take care of the rest.
Edit: On second thought, since my system includes a SMS-1 and I don't have the manuals handy, I am not too sure that my comment above applies with speakers set to large and using only the 990 for bass management. Could someone confirm?

Confirm. A sub used with the bass management of the 990 should have the crossover control (upper cutoff) set to its highest value or defeated. The 990 will apply the crossover filters to each channel, sum the results, and present the proper input signal to the subwoofer.

Here's what I'd suggest:

  • Fronts (rated 38Hz-20kHz): Small, 60Hz crossover
  • Center (rated 68Hz-20kHz): Small, 100Hz crossover (might also try 80Hz)
  • Surrounds (rated 46Hz-20kHz): Small, 80Hz crossover
  • Sub: On (no choice there, with all speakers small), and set the crossover control on the sub as high as it will go. I didn't see a bypass option on the sub's controls, so buy setting it as high as possible you avoid having the 990's crossovers and the sub's crossover overlap.

Hope that helps.
