surround sound test media - 06/15/06 10:09 AM

can anyone suggest a few video/audio test discs for testing out the surround sound capabilities of my new 990? I've had it up and running for a week now and basically using known dvds to try and get the setup just right.

how are others doing it?

regards,

The two best discs for system setup/calibration (both audio and video) are Digital Video Essentials and AVIA. Both are available at Amazon.com and other retailers. I typically use DVE for calibrating my HDTV and the 990's test tones to get the channel levels dialed in, then perhaps tweak the sub to get what I like by listening to a few movies (although with the SMS-1 in the system now I've stopped doing that - the process of setting up the SMS-1 gets the sub very nicely dialed in).

Those are great discs for setup. If you are looking for a movie to put it through it's paces, try the intro of Serenity. The scene where the ship is decending into the atmosphere has great effects and music. It's also a fun movie to watch.

Chapter four Master and Commander for some really good deep bass effects. Also has some interesting back ch. effects thrown into the mix like people running above deck and behind you.

Wrglyvill,
How do you like your PTAE900u with your Carada 96" screen? Did you have any Panasonic projecter (eg.PTU300L 500 or 700). If yes, what improvement you experience?

I have PTU300L with 120" Carada BW screen. Would upgrade the projecter soon. Still not made up my mind for LCD or DLP yet.

Tks.

Kwok,

This is my first projector so I have nothing to compare to. With that being said I am blown away by the picture of this entry level projector. My thought was to get this with the rebate and wait until the industry had the 1080P technology sorted out. Then I could upgrade. I am extremely happy with the setup and don't feel like I will have the itch for a while (famous last words). I also have to give hugh kudos to Carada for making a great screen at a reasonable price. If your projector is not 720P, that is probably reason enough to upgrade.

Good luck,
Mark

Mark, Tks for advice.
My PTL-300U is just half 1080p.....i.e. 5040 via DVI.

Has anyone tried the opening sequence of Titus, with Anthony Hopkins? I love the Korean drums.
Not as dynamic on the 990 as my Act3 but still impressive.
