Sunfire TGIII Processor vs 990 - 04/22/06 07:39 PM

Greetings, I am the owner of a Sunfire Theater Grand III processor that I have been using for 2 years. I am thinking of selling it and purchasing an Outlaw 990 and using the extra $$'s to upgrade my present video display. My question is do you think that I will notice any dropoff of audio qulity after the switch?
I am pleased with the Sunfire Processor but if I can swap out and gain digital video switching and a few hundred dollars it seems like a no brainer.
Any users of the Sunfire TGIII Processor please jump in.

Thanks
John

john07,
I just did a Google search for the Sunfire TG III. There was a review on audioholics.com.
Read the review and make your own conclusion.
Basically they did mention the Sherbourn and Outlaw 950 (shared platform and the Outlaw unit is discontinued ….mmm) as equal or slightly better products -especially for the price. Audioholics mentioned the Denon AVR-3803 was more flexible and better performer.

I have read from other gunsliners who purchased the 990 as a replacement to the AVR-3803 that there was no comparison. Better soundstage – presentation, steering in DD and DTS, etc.
I myself jumped from a Denon AVR-3300.

I have not heard the Sunfire TG III – but from hanging around in this forum – I would be surprised if you would be disappointed w/ the 990.

Good luck, keep us informed of your decision and welcome to the forum.

Good research, tmdlp. If Audioholics ranked the 950 and its clones as comparable to the TG III, the 990 would likely represent a nice upgrade (I upgraded to the 990 from a 950 and considered it a very rewarding upgrade).

john07, you really can't go wrong with going with Outlaw Audio. I too have the 990 pre and I'm very impressed with it's capatbilities. Sound reproduction is extremely good.

Not sure what your demands are for a good pre amp.. but Outlaw Audio does of course allow you to test their products in your home for 30 days.. and can be returned within those 30 days if it doesn't meet your needs. To me it's what sold me on it.. I was also looking at the B&K Ref 50, but in the end was happy to go with the 990 pre.
