There are no headphones attached to my Model 990. But the audio to my speakers suddenly, and without warning, went away and my receiver is now permanently stuck on "Dolby Pro-Logic II + Dolby Headphone".

When I attach a pair of headphones, I do indeed get audio through them, but removing them doesn't cause the Model 990 to "reset" back to using speakers. I'm not sure I've ever plugged in headphones to this receiver... certainly not recently.

In the Menu, none of the Video or Audio inputs can have a different surround mode selected.

If I go to adjust the levels, audio is indeed output to all 8 speaker locations just fine.

I've tried power-cycling it (removing the power, letting it sit, plugging it back in). No dice.

Anyone have any ideas? Bizarre, I know.

Thanks!

Don

Hold down the "MUTE" button for several seconds (three to five, depending on whether you use the front panel or remote) - you have engaged the headphone output, which also mutes the pre-amp outputs and engages whichever headphone mode you picked.

That did the trick! Thanks so much!

No problem!

I grinned a bit this morning when thinking about this particular situation. I also don't have headphones in my system, but one day probably late last year I had the equipment rack door and our toddler grabbed the volume knob rather suddenly. My reflex was to hit mute, but she of course released the mute by turning the knob. Without thinking, I simply held the mute button down - and by the time the volume knob was safe the 990 had gone to headphone mode. It took me a moment to realize what had happened when I tried to un-mute the 990...

I don't recall if you can use the Dolby and Stereo buttons on the remote or if you need to go to the Surround Config menu and select the "HP Mode" (options there being Stereo and Dolby Headphone1 through Dolby Headphone3).
