Stereo Bypass

Stereo Bypass - 08/06/03 07:43 PM

I have a CD player and DVD player connected to the 950. The CD player only has analog connectors while the DVD is connected with digital coax connector and analog. When I play a CD in the DVD player and set on stereo bypass I get booming and muffled bass. If I put the same CD in the CD player the bass is quite nice. Can someone help explain why this is happening and how I can better set up my 950 for the DVD player?

My first thought is that the DAC in the DVD player is the culprit, since it appears to be the only real difference between the two cases.

Does the DAC in the DVD come into play when I am in stereo bypass mode?

Raider, I think in terms more of my 5.1 direct but I believe that’s correct for 2-c (stereo) also. The CD is still a digital recording so if your in “bypass” on the 950, then the DVD player’s DAC
is in play doing the D to A conversion whether its two channels or 6.

Yep, sure does. In stereo bypass mode, the 950 is using the analog inputs without applying and analog/digital conversion of any sort. The source device (CD, DVD, turntable, whatever) is responsible for the digital to analog conversion (except for the turntable, which never left the analog domain, of course). Using stereo bypass with two different sources will act as an excellent way to compare the DACs in those two units, since it takes the 950's DACs out of the equation.
