950 Remote & Hughes DirecTV Reciever w/TIVO

Everything is hooked up and going fine (at least until my wife finds out we need to buy a phono pre-amp, heh heh) but I have had to go back to using two remotes when watching TV, one for volume control, and one for TV receiver control.

The problem is that the Hughes remote does not know about Outlaw components, and the Outlaw remote, while it appears to know about Hughes' non-Tivo boxes, does not have a code for the joint Hughes-Tivo box. Cycling through the possible codes does not help.

Is there a solution short of programming one macro at a time? (Apart from getting yet another universal remote) Are the Outlaw 950's basic functions, such as power on/off, source cycle, and volume control matched by another Maker where I could program the Hughes remote? Or is there something I am missing about the Outlaw remote?

The Outlaw 950's remote is a re-badged Home Theater Master SL-9000 , and supports learning individual commands from other remotes. If you can not find a code in the 950's remote for the Hughes box, you can teach the buttons to the 950's remote one by one (which incidently allows you to put the commands where they make sense to you -- which is not always where they end up with universal remote codes). The 950's manual offers some basic guidance on this, but if you start getting fancy with it you might want to also get the SL-9000 manual in PDF format for some extra tips.

Just wait until your wife finds out you need a new remote to. I found the SL-9000 remote just did not work for my wife at all. There is nothing intuitive about using the remote and I would have had to write a manual for her on how to use it. I ended up getting a MX-700 and programmed it for her for Mothers Day. So far so good. I'd recommend looking into the 700 or the MX-500 which is a fair bit cheaper. I've also heard the 500 is slightly better for TIVO users.

You are a prophet. When I was showing her how things worked, she asked me to write down which buttons to push to do what. In the particular instance, how to select which video channel the TV would pick up. I have this feeling of impending doom, but despite that I managed to say: "If it comes up I am sure you will figure it out."

However, since I do not think any remote designed or conceived of by man or woman will solve this particular situation, I will bravely soldier on.

I would seriously look at the Home Theater Master MX-700 or MX-500. Check out Remote Central.com for detail reviews and support and potentially surfremotecontrol.com or bluedot.com as vendors.

I have the MX-700 and have setup dozens of Macros. The kids and wife both like it.

I've had good luck with the 950's SL-9000 remote, but I am still thinking seriously about picking up an MX-500. The MX-700 is a bit pricier than I'd like, but the MX-500 (around 1/3rd the price -- $113 from bluedo.com and an MSRP of $189, compared to $350 from bluedo and a $499 MSRP for the MX-700) is very appealing. I may pick one up next month and see how it does.
