1050 comparison - 08/27/02 10:57 PM

Outlaws -

I've been thinking about upgrading from my 2 channel audio system to a "modern" surround 5.1 system. Currently, I have a 14 year old Adcom 555 power amp, pre-amp, tuner and Kef Reference speakers. I looked into using my existing equipment and adding on, but it became cost prohibitive. My question is:

Has anyone on this board moved from a similar Adcom based system to the 1050? If so, is the sound quality (2 channel)comparible to the Adcom setup? For speakers, I'm considering the Aperion Intimus 5.1 package.

Thanks in advance!

markv...I had a NAD pre-amp,I still have an Adcom 555,Carver 1.0t,Carver TFM 15,and i am using the Outlaw 1050 as a pre-amp;using the center channel from the 1050,and rear center surround from the Outlaw.I think the Outlaw is a great product that you just have to try and find for your self that everything that you have read before is TRUE....You owe it to your self to find out!!!In my experience you could spend 2000.00 on a pre-amp theater processor or spend 499.00 and spend the rest of the money in speakers for your home theater.....Just my humble opinion.

I wouldn't say my system is similar, but I did recently move from an older Rotel DPL preamp with outboard decoder to the 1050. At the time I was using an excellent Tandberg stereo amp for my mains and a Rotel multichannel amp for the center and rears.

Today I am using the 1050 as my preamp and to drive the center and rears while my Tandberg still drives the mains.

Very pleased with the ease of use and better sound. Hope this helps.

My previous system was an Adcom 565 preamp, two 565 amps and a NAD 3225(?) tuner. I am now using the 1050 with 5 Marantz MA-500's and my old Polk SDA-1C speakers, a Polk CS-200 center and two really old larger advents for surround. I would say for two channel it is very close to the old system plus I have HT capabilities and a 6.1 direct input for SACD. I am waiting (and waiting) to be able to upgrade to a 950. I am especially interested in listening to my stereo sources in the bypass mode since the 1050 does not have bypass on the stereo analog inputs. Hope this helps.
