The latest issue of The Perfect Vision picked the 1050 to anchor its entry level home theater set-up and they also picked it one of the top ten receivers(class 5). They often rave about it every chance they get even though it doesnt have PLII etc.

Hey e-dogg, i was just wondering... what are other receivers in the same "class" as the 1050?

The different classes are really just price catagorys. The 1050 was by itself in its catagory. Just above it at $850 was the Marantz sr 7200. Thier top pick, is the Denon avr 5803 at $4300.
