I use the following speakers with my Model 1050.

Center KEF Q95C
Left and Right Front KEFQ35
Left and Right Rear KEF Q1

I have no reason to believe the tweeter on the center speaker is blown, but the sound coming from the center speaker sounds strange and muffled, especially dialogue. As a result, is it difficult to follow the character dialogue even on a new DVD like The Fellowship of the Ring. What could be causing the problem? Could it be a speaking setting on the 1050? Should I expect the center channel to chop off all of the higher frequencies?

Thanks,

Ken

Typo, I meant a speaker setting, not a speaking setting.

Have you switched your center with one of your other speakers to verify that it is indeed a 1050 problem? Otherwise I'm not aware of a setting that would make just 1 speaker sound bad but lets take it 1 step at a time, lets try the swap and see if the problem stays with that speaker or stays on the center channel.

is the center channel biwireable? If so, check to make sure that the jumper bar is in place and both sets of binding posts are hooked up to the 1050 -- the behavior that you're seeing could easily be the result of the tweeter not being hooked up.

I am not at home now, but I believe that I had the same problem when I switched out the speaker. In any case, I would like to look the possibility of a problem with the bi-wireable hookup. The speaker manual is not very clear about how the bi-wiring works. I'll check to make sure the jumper bar is in place. Unfortunately, I won't have a chance to try it out until I return home this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Otherwise, could it be a 1050 setting?

Have you checked the gain on the center channel ? If you have set it to a negative value it would cause the problem you are describing. If it's zero then perhaps setting it higher would solve the issue also.

The Delay for the center channel could cause a problem also if set incorrectly but not muffled sound.

I have the Q95.2C with my 1050. The biwire jumpers should run from red to red and black to black. The speaker wire is connected to the bottom red and black binding posts. 2 things to try as well make sure that you've got the speaker wire connected firmly on the 1050 end. If you use spades or banana plugs make sure that the wire is firmly in place here as well.
One other thing, if you try another speaker do it by switching the wires on the 1050. If the speaker sounds OK then switch the 95c with Q15 at the speaker end. Good luck
