is it normal on a 5.1 setup for the 950 to read 3/2.1 on the front panel when a movie is about to start? If i am getting 5.1, why is the panel saying 3/2.1?

3/2.1 is correct. it is for 3 fronts, 2 rears, and the .1 is the LFE channel.
